A 3kg DIY Collaborative Robot with P series actuators Can Become a Mini Generator
2026-09-04
What happens to the voltage when a small collaborative robot runs at different speeds? We built a 3kg DIY collaborative robot using our P Series harmonic joint modules and tested the instantaneous voltage during different motion speeds.
🔹 Hollow design for clean internal cable routing 🔹 P Series harmonic joint modules for compact and precise motion 🔹 During deceleration and high-speed movement, the motor can generate regenerative current due to back EMF 🔹 In certain operating conditions, the robot can literally behave like a small generator
As the robot moves faster, the regenerative voltage can increase significantly. For high-speed applications, a braking/resistor discharge module is generally recommended to safely dissipate the regenerated energy and protect the drive system. This is one of the interesting engineering challenges when building compact collaborative robots — the faster you move, the more attention you need to pay to regenerated energy! ✔ Built with P Series Harmonic Joint Modules ✔ Payload: 3kg ✔ High-speed motion & regenerative energy test ✔ Hollow cable-routing design
